Crafting Serenity: A Custom Water Feature Transformation

You don’t always need more space — you need the right view, the right sound, and a sense of separation. This backyard faced a constant visual distraction from a nearby school, and the existing grade left the space muddy and exposed. The goal wasn’t “landscaping for curb appeal.” It was to create a retreat: quiet, natural, and private — something that feels established, not newly installed.

The client wanted to replace an everyday backdrop with something that feels like nature — a forest edge, not a fence line. That meant changing how the property behaved: raising and shaping the land to create elevation, improving footing and drainage, and building a setting where privacy comes from the landscape itself.

Shades of Green approached the project as a complete outdoor environment. The land was elevated to form a secluded backdrop, mature evergreens were installed to create immediate screening, and a pondless water feature was built as the focal point — delivering sound, movement, and calm without the maintenance burden of an open pond. A durable paver patio completed the space, creating a stable surface for daily use and entertaining.

Elevation and reshaping of the backyard grade to create a natural, secluded backdrop
Drainage and base preparation improvements to keep the patio and surrounding grades stable through seasonal change

The Result

Granite Majesty: Sculpting the Canadian Shield into a Cottage Sanctuary

Canadian Shield properties don’t give you a blank slate — they give you rock, grade, and limits. This cottage landscape needed to feel natural to the site while still being usable: safe circulation from the cottage down toward the water, a clear path to gathering areas, and outdoor features that belong on granite rather than fighting it. The goal was simple: preserve the terrain’s character while making the property easier to live in.

This project was about working with the Shield instead of trying to bury it. The hidden beauty was already there — granite outcrops, boulders, forest canopy, and the shoreline. The challenge was turning that terrain into a cohesive experience: a route that feels intentional, stable footing from zone to zone, and outdoor living spaces that feel placed, not imposed.

Shades of Green integrated natural limestone steps and flagstone paths into the rock’s natural contours, creating a sequence from the cottage down through the site. Granite boulders were used strategically to reinforce the landscape’s structure and maintain the authenticity of the setting. The result is a property that feels like it has always been that way — only now it functions like a retreat.

Every route has purpose, every step feels stable, and the site’s best features — granite, trees, shoreline character — are reinforced rather than hidden.

Beyond the Blueprint: Crafting Custom Outdoor Dreams

Some projects are fully designed before the first stone is set. Others evolve as the space takes shape. In this case, the original landscape plan was executed cleanly — and then improved by a late-stage decision: a full outdoor kitchen and barbecue unit that wasn’t part of the initial scope. The challenge wasn’t installing a grill. It was integrating a major feature without disrupting the layout, finishes, or flow of the space.

The property already had a strong direction: structured hardscape, clean lines, and a clear relationship between levels and gathering areas. As construction progressed, the client saw an opportunity to extend how the space would be used — and asked for a substantial barbecue unit to be added after the plan was already in motion.

Shades of Green treated the addition the same way we treat the original plan: with coordination and finish discipline. The outdoor kitchen was integrated into the existing hardscape so it reads as intentional — aligned to the space, consistent in materials, and properly serviced and positioned for real use. The result is a landscape that feels complete, not “modified.”
